The ELCajon EC-10 is a full-size acoustic cajon with a sapele plywood playing plate and an MDF resonance box. Head and edge sensors in the playing surface trigger a Roland sound module, so electronic sounds can be layered over the natural cajon tone or switched off to play it as an ordinary cajon.
The module offers 30 kit variations in three groups of ten: cajon, percussion and SFX. Each kit has two independent sounds, one for the head and one for the edge. Two buttons choose the sound group and two choose the kit number, while the rear panel carries the power switch, a volume knob and a trigger balance knob for the head/edge mix. Trigger sensitivity can also be adjusted.
A built-in amplifier drives a 16 cm coaxial speaker, and the unit runs on six AA batteries or an AC adaptor. A MIX IN jack takes a phone or player, and an ELECTRONIC SOUND OUT jack sends the layered sounds to a PA or amp. A microphone can also be placed in front of the cajon to pick up the full sound for a PA.
