The La Scala AL5 is an updated version of a design that first appeared in 1963. It is a three-way system in which every driver is horn-loaded, using a 1" compression driver for the highs, a 2" mid-range driver and a 15" woofer. The tweeter is a newly designed unit with a 109 dB sensitivity, working with a 90° x 40° Tractrix horn.
The efficiency of the horn loading means a single watt can produce a concert-level listening experience, so the speaker can be driven by modest amplification. The cabinet is built in Hope, Arkansas as part of the Heritage Series and is finished in bookmatched real wood veneer with a vertical-grain match and a silver metallic grille cloth. Available veneers are Natural Cherry, Satin Black Ash and American Walnut.
The speaker is a passive loudspeaker that connects to an external amplifier. It comes with a 10-year warranty, and a spec sheet and product manual are available for download from the maker.
