The SPD-30 is a portable percussion pad with eight built-in pads, each acting as a separate, isolated trigger unit. It carries its own sound engine with 670 instruments, which can be shaped with parameters such as tuning, muffling, soft attack, tone colour, pitch sweep, volume, pan and reverse. Version 2 of the system program expands the kit count to 99 and adds more phrases and a +6 dB output gain function.
A Phrase Loop function records playing in real time and stores up to 50 phrases, each with up to three layers. Phrase start can be triggered by pad velocity, button presses or an optional footswitch, and players can switch between solo kit play and phrase play. Eight banks of Kit Chains group kits by style for live use. The effects section offers 30 multi-effect types, EQ, a limiter and seven ambience types.
Four dual-trigger inputs and a hi-hat controller input allow extra pads, cymbals, kick triggers or acoustic drum triggers to be added. Connections include MIDI In/Out, USB MIDI and a USB memory port for saving data, plus stereo outputs, a mix input and a headphone jack.
