The Kalimba is a handheld desktop instrument built around twelve tines. Plucking them is picked up by stereo microphones and touch-sensitive areas, which excite a six-voice engine that combines FM synthesis with physical modelling through stereo digital resonators. Knocking or strumming the casing can also excite the engine, and an internal accelerometer lets rotating or shaking the unit animate the sound.
Front-panel touch points handle pad behaviour, pitch glide and timbre changes (Soil and Wind), and two assignable touch points on the back can be mapped to knobs, effects, pitch bend, transpose, tempo and more. Playing aids include 12 scales with per-tine micro tuning, 16 presets, a five-mode arpeggiator, a layering looper with reverse time stretch, a tempo generator with tap tempo and clock division, and built-in effects such as bit crusher, distortion, chorus, flanger, tape, filter, reverb and delay.
It has a built-in speaker and a USB-C rechargeable battery. A 3.5 mm stereo output, 3.5 mm MIDI in and out, an analog clock input and USB-C MIDI connect it to other gear. A protective hardshell carry case is included.
